Behind the Design

When designing a helmet from the ground up, the first thing I had to ask myself was, "What world does this thing belong to?". I decided on the goal, that is, develop a helmet so that if used in either Destiny 2 or Halo Infinite titles, the helmet would fit the world art. The key to the design was simple form and shape, keeping it sleek and aerodynamic with not too many little components. The final resulted in a helmet-mask hybrid, giving the operators neck full range of motion with a mantis appearance. The key to making this work was keeping more complex smaller components imbedded  into the surface of the helmet, not adding too many little pieces onto the exterior shells. To sum this up, allowing an overall simple shape and utilizing curvy shells expands the feasibility of the helmet model to be utilized in either game title.

Development

In the beginning of concept, the helmet was rough sculpted in Zbrush before my personal license was to expire, the rest of the project was carried out in Maya utilizing quad draw to capture desired topology, modeled and UV'd. The texturing and rendering process was done in Adobe Substance Painter. It was important from the start of this project to have the exterior and interior formed and fitted to a human face with an appropriate number of polys, giving full confidence the helmet could be utilized for both game and cinematics.
